The
West New Britain Provincial Cultural Centre was established in 1979 to assist
and encourage the people of WNB to preserve and protect their cultural heritage.
The Centre maintains a register of rare artifacts, historical sites and
monuments in WNB.
The
Centre also runs a small museum to accommodate the collection of traditional
items belonging to the Province. The display of artifacts from the region
includes pieces of obsidian, fragments of lapita pottery, old and
not-so-old examples of bowls and utensils from the different tribes as well as
masks, axes, and shields.
The Museum is located within the Provincial Cultural Centre in Kimbe and the staff are very willing to escort visitors through the display. The Cultural Centre is accommodated in an old building at San Remo Homestead, the original Plantation which has become the site of Kimbe.
