A real Papua New Guinea experience

Muliagani IslandExperience real Papua New Guinea village life on the island of Muliagani, staying amidst the local community in a small guest house is a unique setting.

Muliagani is a small, lovely looking island surrounded by coral reefs set in a clear blue sea. The people are friendly and hospitable and will be happy to share their way of living with you, which still greatly relies on subsistence agriculture, hunting and fishing.

You might want to go with local fisherman, join the women in preparing local food or try for yourself to weave a colourful coconut leaf basket.

You can be part of the smiling children

At night you can join the village elders for a chat around the fire in the 'Haus Boi' or men's house.

The guest house is run by the village women's group, who will cook lovely dishes for you, prepared from local food, fresh from the land and sea. You have to be willing to put up with slight inconveniences such as washing yourself with rain water from a bucket and having a toilet set above the sea. But then again, the view from the toilet is unforgettable!

From Kimbe or Walindi Resort it is a 30 minutes drive to the 'waterbus' stop Kulu river, where a banana boat will take you to the island in two and a half (2 1/2) hours.

Trips that can be made from the island include mangrove and river tours, fishing, snorkeling and picnicking on a nearby uninhabited atoll. We recommend a 2 or 3 nights stay for which you should bring your own towel, snorkeling gear and especially for the boat trip to and from the island, sunscreen and a hat.
