Climb a Volcano

Home Diving Fishing Day Trips Calendar of Events

About twenty kilometres west of Kimbe a track leaves the Talasea Highway.  It starts off through oil palm plantation and at that stage it can be driven.

But the track narrows and starts to climb and then you have to walk.  Come for a trek through the rainforest up to the fascinating volcanic crater of Mount Gabuna, where sulfur fume holes blow like steam engines and green bubbling mud pools create unique scenes beyond your imagination. Gabuna volcano consists of three volcanic peaks, Krummel, Gabuna, and Welcker.  The lower peaks of Gabuna volcano contain the most extensive thermal field in Papua New Guinea.  The last time Gabuna erupted is unknown.

Most of the climb up Garbuna is quite gentle. The trek will take you through lush pristine rain forest, where vast trees rise to form a dense canopy and where you can see some of the innumerable species of flora and fauna that makes this forest so rich and valuable. Your route will take you through the rainforest to the crater of a dormant volcano, crossing some crystal clear creeks, on a bush track known only to local guides. On your way up your guides will point out interesting animal and plant life and show you some still recognizable relics of the settlements of their ancestors, from the time stone axes were still used and tribal warfare was part of life, just a few generations ago.

The walk up to the crater takes anywhere from two and a half hours to four and a half hours depending on your pace. You follow a slowly climbing bush track with a few more tricky steeper parts; but don't worry, your guides will make sure that you are safe.

Sulphur outcrops on Mt GarbunaYou will need plenty of drinking water and to wear comfortable but strong shoes. You have to depart early (seven o'clock) to avoid the sun's heat for the first part of the walk that leads through banana and taro gardens and small coconut plantations. Once you're in the rainforest, you will enjoy the cooler microclimate the forest creates. For your walk in the crater itself you might want to bring sunglasses and a sun hat.

Other peaks in WNB which can be climbed include Mt Lolo for impressive views along the coast from the Willaumez Peninsula to Mt Ulawun, a distance of over 150 km (nearly 100 miles); Mt Pago, a still active volcano, with an interesting caldera at the summit, and Mt Otto.  Villagers will be happy to show you to the top for a reasonable rate.
